Oh dear oh dear oh dear. Can I just say now how much I dislike Dan Brown's writing. I have friends who refuse to travel in tube carriages where there are people reading Dan Brown books.

I have not had the pleasure of reading any of them as yet. I have read the backs of his books ... that was pretty much enough to put me off ever trying to open them.

Digital Fortress is the only book I can remember not having finished. *ever*. but each page felt like a complete and utter waste of my time (and do notice I don't usually have anything important to do with my time..)

Whether or not he is hack, Dan Brown is a talented story-teller. For the most part, his books are well researched. That's not to say that what he writes is factual, but the level of detail he describes helps to suspend the disbelief.

I first read 'The Da Vinci Code' and enjoyed it immensely, not for any great literary significance it held, but because it is very cleverly written. I found 'Angels and Demons' to be a bit more interesting for several reasons: its (loose) basis in physics for one, and my experiences of some of the locations in Rome at which events in the book unfold.

(I have to confess, though, that I wasn't overly keen on 'Digital Fortress'. Knowing what I know about maths, I guessed too many of the twists to keep me interested.)

We all know he extends the truth somewhat, but it doesn't take anything away from the total unputdownability of The Da Vinci Code. I guess I'm just a sucker for suspense...

And I knew after the sighing you did when reading Angels and Demons over my shoulder you were going tell me why it's all a load of pants! The thing is, I know it is, but I read it anyway. It's like watching Neighbours - you know it's crap but you're somehow weirdly fixated on it.

I am sorry was that a defence of his work?? comparing it to neighbours. TBH I have not read enough of his stuff to really give an opinion. I just thought the link was funny and love the word "hack" for some reason

Well, yeah it was! It's true though, and I know you say yourself that it's not the accuracy of the content that's important, it's the ability to tell a story in a gripping way. And that's what Dan Brown does!

And you should definitely read the Da Vinci Code, cos I actually think you'd enjoy it :-)
